Guest Review: Country Style Cinnamon Toast Crunch Doughnut

Country Style Cinnamon Toast Crunch Doughnut

Jeffrey Scott aka the Junk Food Dog here for Cerealously, in the great white north of Canada (I’m actually 15 minutes from Detroit, MI in Tecumseh, Ontario).

I was asked to review a new doughnut from a Canadian donut & coffee chain: Country Style. Seeing how there was one only 45 minutes from home, I went on a wild goose chase for Country Style’s NEW Cinnamon Toast Crunch Doughnut. This new doughnut features their cake doughnut filled (and topped) with cream cheese icing and sprinkled with Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal.

At first sight, the doughnut looks as if someone has cut a donut in half—like a bagel—and smeared the inside with cream cheese frosting. So far so good. Then the thing has the Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal pieces stuck to it strictly from the cream cheese’s tackiness.

The donut itself was either cut and toasted or it came into the store like that, but the inside had a distinct “crust:” not like as if someone cut open fresh cake, all crumbly-like. Country Style’s cake doughnut is also used to make their donut breakfast sandwich, and the doughnut is slightly sweet, dense, moist and has a good chew.

The cream cheese icing is to die for: not cloyingly sweet, but almost like sweetened whipped cream cheese. There’s a good even amount on the inside and on top. Very nice.

The only downfall of the donut is the cereal squares on top are stale in some parts. Not stale as in “left in the counter all day,” because mine was made fresh for me. Rather, it was stale as in either the cereal bag was left open, or the treat comes in a giant food service sized bag and probably stales fairly quickly. I experienced the exact same sensation when I bought Kar’s Cinnamon Toast Crunch Trail Mix two years ago—the cereal had same mushy chew.

But overall, Country Style’s Cinnamon Toast Crunch Doughnut was a great experience. It inspires me to make them again at home fresh, by cutting a donut and using my own sweetened cream cheese and cereal.

The “Bowl:” Country Style Cinnamon Toast Crunch Doughnut

The Breakdown: I give them a 10 for creativity and a 6 for execution due to the soft cereal. (Which means…)

The Bottom Line: …8 Cinnamon Toast Crunch-stuffed road trips to Canada out of 10

  1. After reading this and the idea of making a DIY version:
Now i only need a great recipe für cream cheese frosting (since i’m pretty sure our idea of something similar is a bit different here in germany compared to the us/canadian versions :D)

    Any suggestions? ^^
