News: New 2016 Kellogg’s Cereals to include Smorz, Jif PB&J, and More!

(UPDATE: My review of Jif PB&J can be found here! My review of Smorz can be found here! I reviewed Apple Raspberry Almond Special K Nourish here! Cranberry Harvest Delights Mini-Wheats and the ToGo Mixes have been reviewed, too!)

If all goes well, once January 1st comes around, you won’t even be able to say “Happy New Year,” because your mouth will be happily stuffed with one of Kellogg’s amazing new cereal offerings.

So I guess it’ll sound more like “Hrrby voobreer!”

In a press release yesterday, Kellogg’s introduced a number of the 40+ new products they have planned for good old MMXVI. Among these is 16 new cereals. Take a deep breath, polish your bowl and spoon, and put on your cereal pants sweatpants, ’cause we’re about to talk about the best of ’em:

Special K Nourish: For those who want a little extra special healthiness in their morning, the already encyclopedic list of Special K varieties is about to grow longer, as Apple Raspberry Almond and Coconut Cranberry Almond flavors will hit shelves. Both have multi-grain quinoa flakes, too, so if you’re like me and love hearing the many ways people can butcher the pronunciation of “quinoa,” (kwin-oh-uh? kawaii Noah? Joaquin Phoenix?), 2016 is gonna be a lot funnier, too.

Mini-Wheats Harvest Delights: After Kellogg’s Origins and Pumpkin Spice Mini-Wheats, it seems Kellogg’s commitment to the barnyard aesthetic is going full tilt. Coming in Cranberry with Yogurt Drizzle and Blueberry varieties, these more sparsely iced Mini-Wheats seem to be like the elegant Toaster Strudel version of their traditionally Pop-Tarts-esque, frosting-blasted counterparts.

Kellogg’s To Go Breakfast Mix: Combining chocolate, cereal, and nuts into a single bag, this on-the-go option from Kellogg’s is designed to be eaten without milk and with your fingers. Whoa..no milk? Using my fingers? I’m not sure my body is ready for this. Not since General Mills’ short-lived Fingos in the 1990s has a cereal brand so brazenly tried a hands-on approach to cereal. This time, Kellogg’s is trying Salted Caramel & Praline Almond, and Cinnamon Roasted Candied Pecan of their breakfast mix.

Kellogg’s Smorz: We’ve mentioned before how Smorz—which has a combo of chocolate coated graham pieces and marshmallows—is poised to make a comeback. While this news isn’t quite as exciting as a long-dreamed revival of S’Mores Crunch cereal (sorry, Gabe), this is exciting enough to have me starting a celebratory bonfire in the middle of my kitchen. Uhh, if I don’t finish this blog post, you’ll probably know why.

JIF PB&J Cereal: This one has me especially excited. For awhile now, I’ve been trying to recreate the flavor of the mythic PB&J cereal of cereal lore (some debate if it ever actually existed at all), and I planned to post about my experimentation someday. And while that post may still eventually happen, plans are being shelved, as Kellogg’s is making my dream of a PB&J cereal a reality! Jif PB&J will combine regular JIF cereal pieces (one of the best PB cereals, in my humble, slightly nutty opinion) and strawberry flavored puffs. Uh oh, I know some grape jelly fans who might not take this news so well!

Movie Cereals: Kellogg’s will also debut three new licensed, movie tie-in cereals for Captain America Civil War, Finding Dory, and Frozen. While I can already predict what these cereals will likely look like (I’ve got $5 that says they’ll each include oat pieces mixed with crudely shaped marshmallows), I’m nevertheless excited, because thanks to Finding Dory cereal, fish will now be friends and food.

New Pop-Tarts: There’s going to be a crap ton of awesome new Pop-Tarts flavors in 2016, and since just listing them all will bump the length of this post to near Tolstoy lengths, I’ll restrain myself from commenting on each: Frosted Chocolatey Caramel, Maple Bacon, Watermelon, Pink Lemonade, and Spring Strawberry.

New Cereal Cups: Frosted Flakes with Energy Clusters, Froot Loops Bloopers, and Special K Protein will also be available in new on-the-go cups. I can’t really think of a witty remark for these, so instead I’ll just share with you the first song that comes to mind when I hear the word “Blooper.”

Here’s to a delicious 2016! You can read the full release here. Which products are you all most excited for?

  1. Frozen cereal has been out for months now. two different brands actually One under wallgreens nice banner The most unsweet frosted flakes ever and the other a oat and marshmallow bit usual.

  2. I already mentioned it more than enough, but reading this amazing (at least for you) news, is letting m realising again, how unfortunate it is, that cereal per se isn’t really opular in germany anymore… 🙁

    Nevertheless:
Mini-Wheats Harvest Delights: I love mini wheats and a cranberry fillings sounds sooooo delicious! 🙂

Kellogg’s To Go Breakfast Mix: I was like: OMG THATS MY CEREAL!!! Salted Caramel and Nuts! But then i had to realize it’s meant to be eaten without milk… hm… i would robably still our milk over them…

Kellogg’s Smorz: Hell… THAT is probably the sole reason i hate you right now… (i mean the fact i can’t get my hands on it 😉 But maybe kelloggs is bringin them to the UK and it will be a bit cheaper to get them ^^)

JIF PB&J Cereal: Didn’t know kellogg’s already has a JIF Cereal… is it realy that good? compared to all the other peanut butter cereals? (I mean i’m a reeses puffs lover. peanutty, salty and i good hint of chocolate ^^)
But PB&J is a cereal i won’t try. I hate strawberry as flavor and it’s not getting better by mixing it with PB maybe with bacon, ’cause bacon makes everthing better ;))
If it would be cherry or some other jelly flavor i would got for it ^^

Movie Cereals: Don’t be so negative! Maybe there is another gem coming out! Like Madagascar S’mores Jungle Party. Maybe a fruity pebbles frozen cereal: http://www.mrbreakfast.com/cereal/c_1557_frozen_cereal_mexico.jpg 😉

Thanks for the news! I’m looking forward to all your amazing reviews of them! 🙂

    • Thanks for providing your reactions! I loved reading them all. As for JIF cereal as a peanut butter cereal, this is something I’ve been pondering for awhile, and I think it’s definitely one of, if not the best. The only other ones that can compare are the peanut butter pieces in Reese’s Puffs (if you have the patience to separate them out!), Peanut Butter Puffins—which have a really good saltiness that is unfortunately overridden a bit by the strong corniness of the pieces—and Peanut Butter Toast Crunch, which was AMAZING but has been sadly discontinued.

      • First of all: Sure! I love reading your reviews and even more i love “to nerd” about cereals with someone who loves them as much as i do. Though i would love to review all the cereals together with you and i’m sure we would’ve a lot of fun, it’s the least i can do to support you and the cause of the love for all kind of cereal ^^

Second: OOOOOMMMMMG!!! Peanutbutter Toast Crunch was discontinued? My gf loves cinnamon toast crunch and all the reese’s peanutbutter stuff (probably she just loves peanutbutter xD)… that would’ve been the perfect cereal for her… 🙁
While we’re at it: Just saw a video were irish people tryed US cereals and one of them was peanut butter crunch (The Cap’n)). A lot of them didn’t like them. Is it really that bad? I’m asking, ’cause i love the original Cap’n Crunch (i’m sure i already mentioned it in my e-mail asking you for advice which cereal i should ask my friend to get me while he’s in the US) and can’t imagine it to be that bad ^^

        • PB Crunch isn’t bad by any means. I just find it to be the weakest in PB flavor of all PB cereals. It’s more for fans of PB flavored sugar, haha.
And I’m glad to find a fellow cereal geek! Perhaps there will be room someday for guest posts from dedicated fans like you! 🙂
