Spooned & Spotted: Trix Cereal without Artificial Colors

IMG_0269Whether you heard about it or not, these are groundbreaking times for cereal. Why is that?

Because the ground is breaking with all the people upset about the loss of artificial colorings in General Mills cereals. Okay, maybe no one’s really all that upset about it, but as someone who has always valued the opportunity to pour bowl after bowl of technicolor, spherical rainbows, this is going to take some adjusting.

The company announced earlier this year that by 2017, they plan to have all of their cereals will have the artificial colors removed. Some, like Chex and Cheerios, have already had their artificial hues sucked away, but since they were already more beige than a hipster’s sepia-toned short film about armadillo beach parties, no one really took notice.

But now, some of our more kaleidoscopic are next on the chopping block. I just spotted these artificial color-free Trix at my local Kroger. Rumor has it that Reese’s Puffs will be next in line, and tricky marshmallow cereals will likely still hold onto their hues (and their hats, in the case of Lucky Charms) until early 2017.

So what do you all think of this new look for Trix? I won’t say it’s terrible, but I really miss the cotton candy blues and Nickelodeon Slime greens. As it stands now, Trix’s more muted, realistic fruit tones remind me of that still life fruit painting that sits in Grandma’s den above the old candy bowl full of Mary Janes that haven’t been touched since the Nixon era, if not the Mesozoic era.

Tell you what, General Mills. We’ll call it even if you just release some ’90s throwback boxes of fruit-shaped Trix.*

But hey, I shouldn’t even bother trying to bargain: at least the tyranny of Mini Trix is over.

*And yes, I do know that Trix were spheres before they were fruit-shaped. I can only wish for a parallel universe where boxes of both can peacefully coexist.

  1. While blabbering about ravioli on a cereal related blog i totally forgot to say something about the color… -.-

I think they don’t look that bad. I rather think they look really tasty, but they don’t look like fruit cereals anymore… froot loops, pebbles and trix have to look like they just came out the factory right next to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant… that’s their trait. 🙂

  2. OMG! Are they… argh… just listening to all those people who never eat the cereal but complaining about too much sugar in it and all the other stuff?
The cerals are more than tasty, our parents and especially we are still alive and if you don’t to eat food with artifical flavors or if you don’t want your kids to eat it: DON’T DO IT or DON’T GIVE IT TO THEM!

    -.-

Poor Dan… did you buy one of those boxes and is there a post following were you compare the old trix and the new one? I’m just soooooooo fuc**** curious if leaving out the artifical flavors will result in something no one wants to eat anymore ^^
As i already mentioned i also want to know if the US version of froot loops taste different from the EU version and if so, why? is it corn syrup against sugar? Artifical flavors? Though while i was searching for the ingredients in US froot loops, old Trix and EU froot loops i just discovered kelloggs isn’t using artifical flavors for theri US version of froot loops either… so… hm…

We have a famous brand called maggi in germany that sells canned ravioli (somehow like spaghetti o’s just with ravioli) and one day they jumped on the bandwagon of not using any flavor enhancer in their products (including the famous canned ravioli)… long story short: they aren’t bad but not as good as they used to be and as i remember them… so i’ really hope GM is not going to regret this step…
(I mean i don’t care about Trix that much since i wouldn’t have liked them either way, but lucky’s and reese’s? HELL! DON’T DARE TOUCH THEM! ^^)
