Review: Blue Bunny Cinnamon Cereal Mini Swirls Ice Cream Cones

Blue Bunny Cinnamon Cereal Mini Swirls Ice Cream Cones Review

It may only be May, but where I live, the groundhog-empowered, seemingly never-ending winter has so quickly given way to a summery heatwave that spring is but a…wait, what’s spring again? Some sort of stacked potato chip, right?

Sorry if the heat has jumbled my neural circuitry a bit—everyone knows that doing something as simple as calling for a cable appointment in A/C-less heat is frustrating enough to leave Dante quivering. I’m trying to self-medicate with fans at turbine speed and frozen vegetables to the cranium, but thanks to Blue Bunny, I can take my medicine by mouth.

The ice cream brand’s newest Mini Swirls—fancy name for cones the size (and shape) of a witch’s bird-flipping finger—is exciting enough to bring frozen scooped desserts back to this blog. They rarely appear due to my mild lactose intolerance, but I’ll make exceptions for things like corn-flaked Oreos.

Aptly titled “Cinnamon Cereal” these waffle cones—which are small enough to comfortably clasp (like a pencil) and eat (not like a pencil)—are topped with ice cream, a vanilla coating, and knock-off Cinnamon Toast Crunch. We’ll call it Cinnamon Broast Munch.

Mmm, broiled cereal!

Despite the hesitance of my soon-to-be ursine stomach, it was love at first bite when I finally tried my Cinnamon Cereal Mini Swirl. Actually, it was “sensitive tooth pain” at first bite, but you get the picture.

Surprisingly, the dollar store bouncy ball-sized ice cream pat on each cone was the weakest flavor component. Not that it’s bad ice cream—I found it to be a creamy and sweet, although not too potently vanilla-y, balance of soft serve and hard scoop—but the frozen dairy’s subtly flavored neutrality is quickly outshined by the more taste bud-hospitable geographic terrain it’s wrapped in.

Namely: the rich polar sea of vanilla glaze that hugs the ice cream like a buttery, spherical anti-blanket. Chillingly delicious, I thought this vanilla sheet ghost (with eyes made from my two fangs) was a white chocolate coating before reading the box. Smacking of decadent buttercream with a twist of whatever they coat Frosted Animal Crackers in (probably magical moon nectar), this coating is what ice cream aspires to be.

And honestly, so do I.

What really makes this coating fun is how it interplays beautifully with the cinnamon cereal bits. Generously glued onto the cone (probably by magical moon glue), these bits are somehow better than actual cinnamon cereal—Broast Munch, Toast Crunch, or otherwise. They have a graham cracker-like tastiness to them, as well as a golden doughiness to complement an underlying sweet, yet slightly subtle, cinnamon sugar flavor.

I imagine this is what the debris will taste like after the great Teddy Graham Civil War of 2814. Mark your calendars and build a shelter, kids.

Taken together with the vanilla, even deeper nuance emerges from this holy union. From the depths of the cinnamon bits’ truest chakras comes notes of what tastes like nutmeg and ginger. When swirled into the buttercreaminess below, the whole cone reminded me of a gingerbread man ice cream sandwich, served on top a pumpkin roll to further send piercing late-year vibes into my early summer.

Not that I’m complaining: having winter feelings with warm weather is the reason I keep Googling plane tickets to Christmas Island.

Equally surprising as the ice cream disappointment is the waffle cone’s comparative vapidity. Much more sugar or cake cone than waffle, this delicately crunchy Atlas who holds a world of flavor remains pretty hollow—both in terms of its largely one-note, though slightly biscuity, sweetness as well as its inability to uniformly fill itself with ice cream, leaving behind pockets of empty cone air for my sorrows to wallow in.

But there’s no reason to cry over non-spilled, non-existent frozen milk: ultimately Blue Bunny’s Cinnamon Cereal Mini Swirls are a fantastic summer treat. Brimming with cinnamon-roll-meets-holiday-dessert goodness, this is unlike any take-home ice cream cone I’ve had in a while. I highly recommend it for any hot weather cereal fans who are either looking for a breath of November refreshment or simply don’t want their breakfast cereal to evaporate.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to chase this with a double scoop Lactaid cone.

The Bowl: Blue Bunny Cinnamon Cereal Mini Swirls Ice Cream Cones

The Breakdown: Mild-mannered ice cream and spacious waffle cones can’t stop this nearly pumpkin-ginger cinnamon treat from being an early contender for Summer 2018’s “Coolest Cone” award.

The Bottom Line: 9 Easter/Christmas Island crossover potlucks out of 10

***Disclaimer: I was sent this sample by Blue Bunny (as well as their equally good, but not breakfast-related Mint Chocolate Mini Swirls), but I promise their generosity did not influence my score.***
