Review: Peanut Butter & Cocoa Pebbles Cereal

Yabba dabba DUUUUDE!

That was my dinosaur bone-a fide reaction after smelling, eating, and then continuing to eat Post’s latest entry in the Flintstone clan’s second most vitamin-packed series of products: Peanut Butter & Cocoa Pebbles cereal.

The reason I was so surprised was because PB&C Peebs (the two of us are close now, so I can use pet names) is the first Pebbles cereal since Sugar Cookie to win me over.

See, I’ve historically treated the cereals with snark and mild derision, as I’m not usually a fan of airy cereals that leave me hungrier after I’ve finished them.

But here, oh sweet Barney here we have a cereal tasty enough to justify a vicious cycle of crunch-munch-repeat.

So hold onto your novelty Jurassic Park hats, because I’m about to walk you through it bite by trilobite.

Though they may look and smell like Reese’s Puffs after a cheese grater accident, Peanut Butter & Cocoa Pebbles actually have a distinctive chocolate-PB flavor that sets it apart from all the other Reese’s doppelgängers in the category.

Let’s separate the wheat from the chaff, first: the Cocoa component is clearly the weaker of the two. Though it’s still tasty, the milque-chocolate-toast flavor of classic Cocoa Pebbles can’t stand up the richness of its peanut butter brethren in this cereal. Instead, their relatively one-note, sweet cocoa powder flavor lurks around my taste buds’ peripherals in every bite like chocolate bunnies hopping through tall grass.

Or a lone M&M in a bag of trail mix.

In the forefront is the radical Peanut Butter Pebbles, who have a simultaneously earthy and oily peanutty taste that’s similar to the wafered innards of a Reese’s Fast Break.

Wait…Fast Break…Break Fast.

This was part of a grand conspiracy all along, wasn’t it?

Or perhaps not, because with the weaker chocolate flavor, this cereal, when eaten by the gravelly spoonful, tastes more like a Little Debbie Nutty Bar, with a thin and kind of cheap chocolate hiding delicately delicious PB innards.

To no one’s surprise, milk—like a prehistoric river—turns these typically dry and airy rice flour minerals a nourishing sheen.

The peanut butter taste largely stays just as fun, but the cocoa blossoms like Montezuma’s chosen bean into something less like sweetened fudge dust and more like the creamy and milky stuff blanketed onto candy bars.

So still not quite a Reese’s, but pretty much a shaved Butterfinger Crisper.

All in all, a very strong showing from a brand I controversially see as weak. It’s still not my favorite PB chocolate cereal—it’s not quite as densely flavored, nor does the wispy rice base do it any favors—but it’ll surely also make a great mix-in for other cereals, oatmeal, or melted Reese’s stew.

You know, the ol’ pre-summer solstice tradition?

The Bowl: Post Peanut Butter & Cocoa Pebbles

The Breakdown: By reminding me of so many great peanut butter and chocolate treats, these milky, cacao-y and deeply nutty gems have cemented themselves as a niche favorite in the genre.

The Bottom Line: 9 divine legumes out of 10

  1. well, well!
And now i’m sad i asked a friend to bring back Oreo O’hs and Apple Cinnamon Crunch xD
(Though i actually asked him to bring back Nutter Butter, but like the monster cereal last year he didn’t find it… -.-)

I mean i really loved reese’s cereal the time i tasted it (who doesn’t like PB and Chocolate? ^^) and i love my cocoa krispies soggy from time to time… no let me say i rarely eat them not soggy xD (they need to loose a bit of their crunch ^^)… so… these seem to be made für me xD
But hell now i have another reason to bother friends bringing back cereal 😉

As always: Thanks for the review Dan 🙂

    CHEERS!
