Special: Spooned & Spotted — Austrian Cereals

image1 (1)

For all of the non-American readers of this blog, the above photo might seem like nothing out of the ordinary. But for an amazed Michigander like myself?

Tresor? Chocos? Honey Bsss Loops?

What kind of magical wizardry is this?

This latest entry in our reader-submitted Spooned & Spotted series is of the cereal aisle selection at a store in Vienna, Austria. Frequent contributor Marc P. (thanks as usual, Marc!) sent us this photo from his recent Austrian vacation.

While almost every cereal here has an American equivalent, seeing an international take on some of the favorites that Americans may take for granted is, at least to me, incredibly fascinating. I’m always intrigued to learn about all the many cereals of the world. And man, some of these boxes are just so gorgeous that I want to rub my face all over them frame them!

Why can’t the U.S. have super kawaii female bee mascots? Why can’t we have monkeys advertising our Cocoa Krispies (sorry Snap, Crackle, and Pop, but you can’t top a monkey in a hat)? And most importantly:

Why can’t we have the Nesquik Bunny on the front of a cereal with pieces that look suspiciously like…you know…actual rabbit poop?

Okay, maybe there’s an obvious reason for that last one.

  1. Can someone in Germany/Austria send me some Froot loops ? they’ve stopped making EU froot loops in the UK and i want them as more of a weekday cereal and save the naughty artificial sugary U.S Froot loops as a weekend cereal !

    • I have to admit im not really familiar with the shelves in austrian grocery stores and supermarkets, but here in germany you can get most (and as i mentioned sometimes more) of those cereal varieties in every single grocery store/supermarket.
And since it’s europe… i’m sure a lot of them are also available in other countries (like italy or france for example) too 🙂

  2. Yay! \o/
Looks like a cereal Aisle in germany… with one or two cereals missing. ^^
But you really call them amazing? I think they are kinda boring… just the ordinary versions with repeating flavors (chocolate and honey aaaand… chocolate… did i mention chocolate?) of cereals in different shapes and sometimes slightly different ingredients… xD

Tresor for example is exactly the same as krave. Just the name is different, ’cause crave with the “special k for kelloggs” wouldn’t work out in germany(or austria) so kelloggs is using the german word for “safe/vault” (how brilliant! ‘ause those little pieces have something hidden inside!!! -.-), and the flavors are kinda different. Instead of double chocolate we have one version with nougat inside and instead of s’mores we got douo chocolate with white “chocolate” inside a dark chocolate biscuits (which i already mentioned here: https://www.cerealously.net/review-halloween-krave-cereal/#comment-228 and aren’t displayed)

The chocos are just the chocolatey wheat flour version (again chocolate) of cocoa krispies (rice) and cocoa puffs (corn) shaped like frito lays xD
Though i like them over kelloggs version of the “bunny poop cereal”, which was called “chombos” in my childhood featuring a huge elephant as mascot and are now called Choco krispies xll (http://www.my-food-online.eu/media/image/thumbnail/cf5e80dcec3b3278d50ab86291d28d7d_720x600.jpg), it’s still nothing “new or totally special”. (i have to admit the whole using wheat flour insteat of corn or rice is giving the cereal a way firmer texture and way different feeling while eating it, still for me it’s just another chocolate cereal version)

The nesquik cereal btw is definitely a winner. But not because the cereal itself is consisting of wheat flour, ground maize AND rice flour or the texture is somehow special, but it turns your milk into nesquik cocoa… that is just something you can’t argue against… ^^
(If you don’t like the rabbit poop shape, there is also a version with letters: http://www.worldofsweets.de/out/pictures/generated/product/1/1000_1000_99/nestl–nesquik-buchstaben.jpg and for all those who like a bit of white rabbit poop you can’t really taste while eating them, the duos: https://shop.rewe.de/fruehstueck/cornflakes-cerealien/nestle-nesquik-duo-cereal-325g/PD326760)

The Kelloggs BSS are btw really amazing (but as i already mentioned like honey, caramel, maple flavors a lot more than chocolate). But the downside is, that the honey pops totally replaced one of my all time favorite cereals “the corn pops!”
I loved them and probably still love them… i loved Sugar Pops Pete and really want to eat a whole box of them again xD

Another fact i have to admit is, that with the “cookie crisp chocella toasts” (displayed right next to the froot loops) and which are somewhat nutella toasts as cereals (at least it’s said they are; wasn’t able to try them yet) we have another amazing cereal… though i would like to have french toast crunch here a bit more than the “nutella version” xD

btw one of the few special cereals we have here isn’t displayed either: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion_Cereal
(awesome cereal and awesome candy bar xD)

    tl;dr
Amazing or wizadry isn’t what i would call this cereal collection, especially with all those us cereals and special/limted versions in mind. ^^
