Spooned & Spotted: Count Chocula Treats (2020)

With a crunchy creak, the Count’s fudge-encrusted crypt has opened again, and with only one cocoa-buttered fingernail poking out so far, the news is…promising.

Thanks to Positively Ghostbusters, we have our first look at what 2020 has in store for Count Chocula plus his fellow Monster Cereals Franken Berry and Boo Berry. While I’m not holding out hope for a Frute Brute and Yummy Mummy return, much less a reversion to these now-corn-based Monstrosities’ former oat flour glory, the ear-shaped head of a vintage Chocula is enough to leave me spooking my pants about Halloween in July.

What this vintage Treats packaging means for this autumn’s mainline Monster Cereals remains uncertain. While Cereal Life discovered above that Monster Cereal 3-Packs are already in stock on Sam’s Club’s site, it’s using the same listing as year’s previous, with the boxes shown appearing identical to 2018’s Monster Marshmallows edition Monster Cereals. Plus, even if the standard boxes do appear the same, this d0esn’t preclude General Mills from releasing vintage versions to other retailers like they have in the past—though the vintage Treats also being a Sam(hain)’s Club spotting makes the whole situation a little confusing.

Ultimately, until we get an official announcement from General Mills, which usually happens in mid-August, we can’t know for sure. If one thing’s for certain, it’s that this monstrous trio’s legacy hasn’t been truly respected in years, so we can do so much blood sacrificing wishing in hopes of a brighter—well, darker—future.

  1. Not buying Monster cereals ever again unless they change the recipe back to oat flour. The all corn formula is just terrible compared to how it used to be. Sad that folks of a certain age never had these cereals when they were awesome. (1971-1992) was the original recipe timeframe.

    • I agree. The last time I bought the Monster cereals was when they re-released Yummy Mummy and Frute Brute a few years ago. The Monster cereal are horrible for the most part. Barely any taste to them. I can’t believe they haven’t even thought to come up with a new monster cereal after all of these years. Like a Witch, Bride of Frankenberry, or creature from the black lagoon. Just something different other than the same 3 monster cereals every year.

  2. General Mills, you have waited way too long to come out with this marshmallow treat. Who doesn’t love the combination of chocolate and marshmallows?!
