Spooned & Spotted: Cereal & Pancakes! (IHOP & Cap’n Crunch)

New IHOP Cereal Pancakes (Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch)

(UPDATED MARCH 2: IHOP is adding frequent Lucky Charms co-collaborator Cinnamon Toast Crunch to their cereal pancake ensemble, and Cap’n Crunch too!)

Finally. Validation.

For too long, I’ve been playfully chided by friends, frenemies and sea anemones alike for my admittedly uncommon habit of drizzling maple syrup on just about every cereal out there—just to see if it’s good! And it almost always is! But now? IHOP is giving me implicit permission to go full hog on a stack of cereal pancakes, amber lagoon and all.

What’s that? There’s no mention of syrup in this ad for IHOP’s new Cereal Pancakes? Well, there’s (strangely) no explicit brand mention of Lucky Charms either, so forgive me for wanting what is already no-doubt a brain-buzzer of sugary madness to slide down my gullet a bit easier.

IHOP Cap'n Crunch Pancakes

Sure the Lucky Charms (Fruity Lucky Charms, specifically) pieces are exciting, but what’s got me geeked here is the “CREAMY CEREAL MILK MOUSSE” drizzled about with ersatz artistry. No clue exactly what it’ll taste like, but if I’m already taking creative liberties with these panned cakes, I might as well scrape off all the mousse, replace it with syrup, and take it home to eat with a bowl of Eggo Cereal.

Because no disrespect to IHOP, but only one ounce of awesomeness? I can do better.

Speaking of domesticated griddle cakes, Cap’n Crunch is also diving back into the pancake game in a whole new way.

Thanks to Junk Banter, we now know that the Cap’n has picked Aunt Jemima as his new first mate. The two are teaming up for Cap’n Crunch’s Berrytastic Pancake Mix, a just-add-water buttermilk mix with “flavored bits,” a missed Crunch Berry name drop which is just as surprisingly vague as IHOP’s Charmless Cereal Pancakes.

It does indeed appear that the Crunch Berry sediment in this mix is more minuscule than even the most eroded Fruity Pebble, but that won’t stop me from emptying Aunt Jemima from head to hips atop a stack of these flapjacks.

Or, you know, plopping some smuggled cereal milk mousse on top.

  1. So, I just got back from IHOP, where I had the Cap’n Crunch pancakes, and while tasty, they weren’t exactly anything to blog home about. The blue syrup (which is *sparkly*) has a pleasingly smooth vanilla flavor, but I wasn’t really getting any “cereal milk” notes from the mousse. Granted, I don’t have the sophisticated palate of a professional cereal blogger, but it just seemed to have a generic custardy taste to me.

  2. And don’t forget about the IHOP cereal MILKSHAKES! Cap’n Crunch and Cinnamon Toast Crunch milkshakes are also part of this new menu.

I’m so excited for the pancakes. The cereal pieces are fun, the milk mousse sounds tasty, and I’m happy about the return of the Addams Family purple whipped topping. If I have any minor quibble, it’s that I wished they used regular Lucky Charms and not the fruity kind. After all, they’re using regular Cap’n Crunch pieces and not just the crunch berries.

Can’t wait for your review of these, assuming you’re planning to do so.

  3. You start by reminding us how much you love maple syrup, then end the review talking about emptying Aunt Jemima on stuff. Aunt Jemima doens’t make maple syrup, only the appalling and mouth-coating pancake syrup crap. Have you confused the two?
