Spooned & Spotted: Rice Krispies Treats Cereal (New “Recipe”)

New Recipe Rice Krispies Treats Cereal

So this is how a legend dies.

With an epidemic of marshmallows.

I’m usually pretty positive about new cereal news. Whether it’s a sour cereal or a savory cereal, I’m always willing to give iffy premises the benefit of the doubt. But this? This is egregious. The most insensitive offence since Alpha-Bits annihilated what little cereal clout they had left.

Yes, Rice Krispies Treats, a big-time cult favorite cereal since its 1993 debut—even as it became harder to find in recent years—is “back” with a “new recipe” that Kellogg’s somehow thinks we won’t notice is a complete abandonment of what made RKTC so good.

The cereal was comprised of small Rice Krispies clusters: demurely unfrosted versions of today’s Snap, Crackle Poppers that were bound by a buttery marshmallow goo that was the real star of the show. It was a clever facsimile of a real Rice Krispies Treat—think a thematic cousin of Powdered Donettes, and just as sweet.

But now? It’s (Frosted) Rice Krispies and Marshmallows. That’s it, folks. Show’s over. Kellogg’s has already made some dubious decisions lately to make a half dozen cereals all using the same flavor profile of “sweetened sugar ring,” and now they’re continuing the pandemic replacement of creativity with marshmallows, while also lobotomizing a modern cereal myth. I’ve spotted this certainly new and dubiously improved stuff at Target, but it should be everywhere by now.

I’ll give Kellogg’s a dainty sliver of benefitted doubt that the Krispies might taste different here (it does say sweetened toasted rice), but if you don’t see a review of it on this blog soon, it’s probably because my sliver was shattered.

Rest in smaller pieces, my deconstructed old Treat. Let’s remember the good times:

    • Same. Every year on my birthday, my husband buys me a couple boxes of my favorite cereals, so every year, I’m reminded of this travesty.

One year I ate my favorite childhood food for the last time ever, and didn’t realize it.

  1. What a massive disappointment. I wonder if they did any trials and taste testing with this new recipe? It is an absolute travesty. There is no comparison in taste. The original recipe was so good and was my all time favorite cereal. When Walmart started to consistently carry it, I was there once a month buying several boxes for my apartment. Please bring the original recipe back and do away with this joke of a replacement!

  2. What a total disappointment!! I always stock piled this cereal as we not only ate it for breakfast but also ate it as a snack. I purchased 2 boxes of this cereal and was shocked how a terrific cereal became disgusting! Even my grow children always loved this cereal and were looking for it only to learn the cereal was ruined! PLEASE BRING BACK THE OLD RECIPE!!

  3. What a joke, saw them on sale at Target, bought two boxes since they were on sale, was incredibly excited to eat half a box, and couldn’t believe what poured into my bowl. I am signing that petition. I havnt been this mad since they got rid of Mexican flavor Torino’s party pizza.

  4. It’s always some young corporate guy trying to make a name for himself, saying hey if we just do this and save $0.03 a box we could earn the company and extra million dollars a year! That’s how we always get fucked! Pardon the French

    • I literally totaled my Jeep going from grocery store to grocery store looking for them.why would you change the recipe and make them damn near impossible to find? Please inform the Kellogg family I would like a new SRT8 Jeep Grand Cherokee the 2013 the year that was totaled Black or white please and thank you

      • I’m so glad I saw this before I purchased it…I really love the original recipe and I’ve been searching for it for months now years maybe… I WANT THE ORIGINAL RICE CRISPY TREATS CLUSTERS THE WAS THE BEST AND ONLY CERAL I LOVED MY WHOLE LIFE!!!

    • Stumbled across this awesome blog after I spotted the Twinkies ceral. First and foremost, keep up the great work! Second, I’m glad I found a “community” of people who loved this vastly underrated ceral. I knew the writing was on the wall when the original version of this greatness went on clearance at target. I went through the seven stages of grief, and I was soon at peace knowing that I at least had the pleasure of enjoying this for as long as I did. As the Great Albert Einstein once said, it is better to have loved than to have never loved before.

…but then Kellogg’s completely crapped on the soul and purity of this once, heaven in a box. It’s bad enough you killed it, but instead of just leaving it dead, and leaving us with pleasant memories, you raised it from the dead and now it’s a putrid zombie. I know I speak for everyone when I ask, why? Why couldn’t you just let it rest in peace? Why kill some of the last remaining goodness this Earth has? Why haven’t you issued a public apology?

I’d be fine if you never brought it back. I’d move on, find other cereals to get excited about. Smile every time I thought about what once was. All I want are answers. Hopefully some kind soul at Kellogg’s, who never agreed with this in the first place, but didn’t speak up for fear that she’d lose her job will see this post and provide an explanation.

  5. I buy this cereal every week. Well that was until I bought a box of the “new recipe” not paying attention bc the box is the same. Needless to say when I went and opened the box I was like um I think the factory messed up…..then I saw it “New Recipe” I was furious! I still am how could they do this? What research was behind the change bc clearly they didn’t ask consumers!!! Ugh! Bring back the original!!!! If I wanted cereal with marshmallows in it I would buy lucky charms!

  6. I also purchased my favorite purple box, as I always do, and could not have been more livid. I think I may have single handedly kept this cereal around for years, as I used to buy about 5 boxes a week. It was my only food joy I had, and Kellogg’s ruined it. I would rather eat grape nuts than this new formula. It’s awful and you took away your best tasting cereal. Good bye Kellogg’s, at least until you bring the old formula back.

  7. I have been living in Europe for 5 years. I finally moved back to the states this past week. My first stop was Walmart to pickup my favorite cereal I haven’t had in a long time. I open the box and notice right away something isnt right. I then read the front and notice “New Formula”. My heart sank. I poured and giant bowl and hoped it would taste great. What a pile of shit. You lost a customer Kellogg’s. Goodbye…

  8. I got tricked at target (two boxes) and figured it out on the pour. The new recipe is awful! I bought the last case of the original that was at our Walmart the next day when I realized this was it… There will most likely never be another chance to purchase one of the greatest cereals ever created. I’m going to try to make rice crispy treats out of the new recipe. It’s either that or dig a 6 foot hole fill it with gasoline and light them on fire so no one in the future finds them and thinks that this new recipe represents, in any way, the true legend that the original recipe truly is/was.

  9. I’m so glad I’m not the only one! I bought a box last month and was horrified by the marshmallows when I opened it. I tried it anyways and couldn’t finish the bowl. I threw the box away and I’m still furious they ruined me favorite cereal.

  10. Omg this was me. I ordered my fav cereal off walmart shopping app. Later that night I went to have a bowl and I flipped shot lost my mind. I actually broke down like a baby and cried. So out today doing some other shopping and I found a store who had 6 boxes left. I bought all 6 boxes. I signed the petition to change it back and I wrote kellogs on tiwtter.

  11. What a disappointment. I bought a box from Walmart the other day and I regret it. I wrote to Kellogg’s asking for them to change it back, even though I know that it will go nowhere. Sigh. I only hope that what happened to the New Coke in 1985 happens again now.

    • I honestly can’t imagine what Kelloggs was thinking by changing the recipe. Did they taste this new cereal themselves? I can only hope they see comments like ours online and make the decision to reverse course. They do want to SELL their cereal don’t they?

    • I bought a box the other night at Walmart not noticing until tonight when I went to have a bowl for a nighttime snack that the recipe had changed! As disappointed as I was I thought I had at least better give it a try but ended up pouring the bowl down the sink after four or five bites. I wrote a review on Walmart.com, signed the petition (though i’m not really sure how legit that is) and sent a comment to Kellogg’s on their website. Funny, I mentioned to them that it didn’t work for Coca-Cola when they changed the recipe to the New Coke! LOL!

  12. The same… I purchased three boxes, not knowing they were different. Noticed the difference when I began pouring the next morning. I then tried to microwave them to hopefully get a better result. Lol it didn’t work. 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼 Seems like Kellogg is trying to get more brand recognition by making bad products. It’d working!! 😂😂😂

  14. I am sooo glad that I am not the only one who feels like I’ve been bamboozled! This was by far my favorite snack. My boyfriend told me that he had brought me a box of RKTC. I get a bowl that night knowing that I shouldn’t have been eating this late, but it had been awhile since I had it so I got a bowl. Needless to say I was devastated! It taste like the regular Rice Krispie cereal slightly sweetened with marshmallows 😩 bring back the old hard Rice Krispie treats cereal and throw in the marshmallows. But this… this…. Throw the entire “New” recipe away 🚮🚮

  15. Total disappoint! I opened up the box and did not expect to see what I saw..Kellogg’s really??? Please bring back the original version of RCTC! This stuff ain’t right!

  16. I can’t believe how pissed I was when I got home thinking I bought my favorite cereal only to pour a bowl of plain rice cereal with stupid little marshmallows in it. I threw the entire box in the trash. Luckily, I stumbled upon the original version today at the store and am eating a bowl as I type. I’m thinking I need to go buy the rest of the boxes. Lol

    • This story is the one that keeps happening…I bought 6 boxes…I opened 1, gave 1 away, and have 4 sitting. When no one buys them by accident anymore because that is the only reason people bought them they will have to change them back.

    • I was stocking up and bought three boxes of this dreck before I got in the car and noticed it was “new” and “improved”— this trash is unbelievably bad. I WANT MY CEREAL BACK!!

    • Man why did y’all do this I’m pissed love the original recipe better Please bring the old recipe back or just do both

  17. This is serious guys. I went to Walmart today and was excited when I saw this purple box back on the shelf after being missing for several weeks. I got home and opened the box not thinking anything of it but just savoring the clusters of crunchy krispie treats about to be bathed in milk. Next thing I know, I am pouring in to my bowl single pieces of Krispies with white wannabe marshmallow specks. No clusters! And that is when I realized, THEY CHANGED THE RECIPE!!!!! Bastards!!! What has this world come to?!? First Donald Trump, then Fuller House gets cancelled and now this crap they are trying to pass off as an old time classic of cereals!!! I need YOU to sign this petition. If not for you then for the grace of cerealness that has died since this atrocity against the most important meal of the day was committed!! https://www.change.org/p/kellogg-s-us-change-rice-krispie-treats-cereal-back-to-the-old-formula?recruiter=329075109&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=sms&utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial&utm_term=psf_combo_share_initial&recruited_by_id=c6cdf520-1c61-11e5-a01b-85222843197b

  18. Well say goodbye to this customer.

I’ve been buying the original rice crispy treats cerial every chance I get. I accidentally bought this new recipe thinking it was what I grew to love.
    Wrong…

    GOODBYE NEVER AGAIN

    • Literally disgusted! I was so excited when i finally saw my favorite cereal back on the shelf. I didn’t notice the tiny notice on the box “now with marshmallows” until I poured a bowl. It’s soggy and has no clusters. Hard mini marshmallows..yuk! Garbage. I signed the petition. SHAME ON YOU KELLOGGS!

  19. This new recipe is, simply put, horrible. They need to bring back the original, which was amazing. Why did they feel the need to mess with perfection?

  20. I went to the store over many weeks to buy my favorite cereal and it was always out of stock. I went a week and it was finally back in stock. I bought a box and went home to eat a bowl and realized the recipe was changed. I was so disappointed. It was nasty. Bring back the original recipe pleaseeeeee

  21. Was saddened to find out they changed the recipe. Find out the hard way by buying a box after weeks of being out of stock. Only to get home crack open box to find a poor representation of the beloved cereal new recipe. I hope they get the point soon and go back to original.

    • Same!!! I was so mad. It’s completely ruined! I sent them an email. Haha, if we all do it, they may change em back, like honeycomb did.

  22. I am so disappointed ☹️
Who’s bright idea was it to change the damn recipe?? I mean… we’re there complaints about the old??? Of course there wasn’t because the cereal was perfection as is. I got this new mess yesterday… it’s going in the trash today! It taste absolutely disgusting!!! No more purple boxes for me… until they bring back the ORIGINAL recipe 🤨

    • Same!!! I was so mad. It’s completely ruined! I sent them an email. Haha, if we all do it, they may change em back, like honeycomb did.

  23. Bring back the original recipe..PLEASE!! I bought a box recently at walmart not realizing the “new recipe” quote on the bright purple box I always jump at buying because it’s hard to find. I complained on the Kellogg’s site and I’m sure millions of other have too. Just bring back the original recipe..what the hell were they thinking?!

    • I totally agree with you 100%. I too didn’t notice the box said new recipe and I don’t like it. I want my cereal back. I grocery shop at Walmart only because of the cereal isle and mostly because it’s the only place to buy this. But now I don’t even look at it twice.

  24. Omg I can usually find the old recipe in some Walmart store so I thought nothing of it to pick up the purple box and buy it. Didn’t notice until I got home. Disgusting I wish I could get my money back. I’ve been bamboozled. What the hell were they thinking ugh!!!

  25. I got duped by the flashy purple box being suddenly back in stock… Immediately dumped put the bowl I poured and ordered 6 boxes of the original recipe off of Amazon!

  26. Hey all, I had the exact same experience. Finally spotted the purple box and grabbed two immediately to find something had changed. I bought one just to try it and it is literally garbage with marshmallows in it. Anyway turns out there is a petition to change back to the old formula lol. I signed, you should too. Link Below

  27. THEY DO NOT COMPARE WHATSOEVER!!! THEY SUCKS!!! IT’S DEFINITELY A FINANCIAL MOVE.

    CAN WE START A PETITION?!

ALSO, YOU GIYS SHOULD GO COMMENT ON TWITTER…THE ONLY WAY TO GET THEM BACK IS TO COMPLAIN!!!

  28. This new cereal is disgusting and nothing even close to the amazing cereal that Rice Krispies treats cereal truly was.. I even showed my daughter and she had made it her favorite cereal too.. so sad.. I don’t understand why they take something so great and change it to try and “fit the mold” just to make it gross. I hope Kellogg’s brings back the original. Fingers crossed!!

  29. Very sad the old recipe trumps all cereals those original clumps are so awesome and it was sad that u couldn’t get everywhere so not a lot of people knew about it

  30. Im sick to my stomach! I just got home with a box of this imposter SHITE!! YUK..DOUBLE YUK what did they do to my cereal, and how the HELL can they even call it RKTC..Im literally sick and so fired up about this! Ugh

  31. I, too, fell victim to a dying legacy when i purchased three boxes of my favorite cereal, rice krispies treat cereal. I didn’t pay attention to the picture on the box. I was too excited that my local walmart was stocking my favorite cereal. What a let down it was to see marshmallows and plain old rice krispies. Sigh. I returned the remaining unopened two boxes. So long old friend.

  32. That’s unfortunate. I’m guessing it wasn’t selling well and they figured they may as well do something different and stupid.

But if I can rant for a minute, I think part of the problem is how much people have carried on about how “amazing” marbits are in recent years. It’s resulted in every cereal company deciding marbits are the answer, and places like It’s Sugar selling bags of nothing *but* marbits.

It was all well and good when marbits were rare, relegated to cereals like Lucky Charms or the monster cereals. But you go down the aisle now and it seems like half of all cereals have marbits (the ratio would be higher, but all those Life-type cereals balance it out). Far too many new cereals these days just seem to be “whatever and marshmallows.”

I’m not saying marbits don’t add to cereals, but it’s become a crutch for the industry and we have dull-ass cereals like this to show for it now.

    • The Cap’n meanwhile continues to innovate, providing us with outstanding new treats such as the new Cotton Candy Crunch. Yes it is outstanding, go to your local Target now!

I don’t think the Cap’n has ever steered into marbit waters, to stay relevant to your comment.

      • What is this garbage. Months without the best cereal in the world, I buy 4 boxes, only to discover they changed it and now it’s disgusting. What is everything great in this world have to change???? I’ll never buy it again, EVER!!!!!!

    • This is desgusting.i couldn’t even get more than three bites in before I threw away the box. The only place I could find the original was at Walmart and I made sure to grab them three at a time because I’ve literally been eating this cereal every day for years. So sad. Really hope they bring back my favorite cereal!!!

  33. I hadn’t seen any rice krispie treats cereal on the shelves at wal-mart or target for the last 2 months or so. I originally thought that they just discontinued it and was disappointed. Today, I saw that familiar colored box and grabbed 2 boxes without even looking at it closely. It was the new recipe, I didn’t even realize until I poured a bowl of it. I was told to give it a chance. I did. It was terrible, it tastes nothing like the rice krispie treats that came before it. The flavor, the mouth feel, everything that made the cereal great is gone. RIP

    • WTFFF. Went to target today picked up a box of what I thought was RICE KRISPY TREAT CEREAL. Why would they get rid of the cereal and put it in the same packaging as the old one? It’s not the same cereal not remotely so it needs a different colored box.

I opened the box and it looks like regular rice krispy with mini marshmallows. Why would they get rid of something so great and replace it with something not so great.

The whole point of RICE CRISPY TREAT CEREAL, is so that it tastes like rice krispy treats in your bowl. Very disappointed

    • This is HORRIBLE & disgusting why would you change everything about this cereal? Why not just add marshmallows if you wanted to add something to make it “NEW”? I will never buy this again. Way to ruin a good cereal Kellogg’s. Good job. Thanks 👏👏👏👏👏

  34. Hmm…it does say “sweetened” toasted rice cereal, so maybe the pieces will be glazed or something? Still probably won’t compare to the original.
