Special: A Look at New Star Wars Decal Cereal Prizes

IMG_4364Cereal boxes don’t have enough prizes any more. Read that in an angry old man voice if you want to, but I miss the days when every cereal box bottom harbored some secret treasure: a wrist watch, a plastic toy, or perhaps even a Cap’n Crunch whistle that could be used for hacking phone lines.

General Mills must feel that way too, because select boxes of their cereal, including Cheerios, Multi Grain Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Cookie Crisp now contain collectible, sticky Star Wars decals. Aside from the exciting thrill of the cereal aisle hunt (even Boba Fett would have fun tracking every decal down), the other half of the fun with these is finding creative places to stick them. Whether it’s your fridge, laptop, car, cat,  resume, or future tombstone, everything looks better with a giant C-3PO on it.

I have that last part listed in my will.

General Mills did send me and some other Star Wars junkies these six decals of Chewbacca, BB-8, C-3PO/R2D2, Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma, and a Stormtrooper (is that you, TR-8R?), but apparently there’s an extra super rare Millennium Falcon decal out there in boxes of Reese’s Puffs. If you’ve seen it, let me know!

But for now: Chewie, fire up the hyperdrive, because we’re about to make the Meijer Run in under 12 parsecs.

Review: Kashi GoLean Honey Pecan Baklava Plant-Powered Bar

IMG_4360From cereal to oatmeal, muesli, cookies, fruit thingies, crackers, waffles, and even pizza, the products available from the grain-loving folks at Kashi are spread all over the map like grocery store Carmen Sandiegos.

So while Kashi’s cereal usually gets the most buzz, it’s worth sharing the attention with some of the brands more interesting options for morning sustenance. And speaking of buzz, this one’s got a lot of honey.

One of four “Plant-Powered Bars,” Honey Pecan Baklava joins the ranks of Dark Chocolate Cashew Chia, Salted Dark Chocolate & Nuts, and Peanut Hemp Crunch.

I like to imagine these four Plant Power Bars forming a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles-esque team of vigilante crimefighters when the grocery store closes at night.

I won’t serve you a heaping bowlful of words here, either. I promise to keep this review conveniently snack-sized. It might be a stretch to even call this a “breakfast review,” but hey: they’re in the cereal aisle. And when’s the last time you saw the word “baklava” next to your Cap’n Crunch?

Review: Peace Cereal Maple Buckwheat Hemp Supergrains Cereal

IMG_4358From Reese’s Pieces to Ben & Jerry’s Peace Pops and Swedish Peacemärken, the idea of peace has brought us many delightful foods. Until Nabisco decides to release a line of “War-eo” double stuffed blood red sandwich cookies, I think the power of good will continue to dominate the snack aisle.

And the breakfast aisle, too, as the ever-healthy, organic, non-GMO (and all that jazz) Peace Cereal continues to produce innovative new flavor varieties. I’ve been meaning to try Peace Cereal for a long time, but the brand is tragically difficult to find on shelves (try Whole Foods for your best bet).

But now that I have a box on hand, it’s time to bring peace to the galaxy—or at least my cereal bowl—by reviewing Peace Cereal’s Maple Buckwheat Hemp cereal. Continue reading

News: Valentine’s Day Cereal on the Way from LOVE GROWN FOODS

image

(Image via LOVE GROWN FOODS’ Facebook)

Move over, Halloween and Christmas: it’s time for some other holidays to get their chance in the spotlight. We’ve been long overdue for a Valentine’s Day cereal, and now LOVE GROWN FOODS, the makers of several bean-based cereals, is paving the way with—correct me if I’m wrong—the first ever Valentine’s Day themed cereal.

They’re called Love O’s, and as any good Valentine’s Day cereal would, they’re chocolate and strawberry flavored. It’s already been a good year for chocolate strawberry cereal with the release of Batman cereal, but since the Dark Knight isn’t really one for romance, it’s good to have another option for those planning a date night that doesn’t involve spine-cracking vigilante justice.

I’m also just glad they didn’t go with a Conversation Heart-flavored cereal. Chalk and milk doesn’t quite spell “true love” to me.

Like most of LOVE GROWN FOODS’ limited edition flavors, Love O’s should be available in the Kroger family of grocers. They are giving away some on their Facebook page, too. But you wouldn’t want to enter and hurt ol’ Dan’s chances of winning, would you? 😉

What will be next for holiday-themed cereal? Chocolate Easter Bunny Toast Crunch? Cap’n Crunch’s Mother’s Day Breakfast in Bed Crunch?

Personally, I’m holding out hope for Frosted Groundhog Flakes.

Review: Nature Valley Baked Oat Bites Cereal

IMG_4268Why buy G.I. Joe when you can buy G.I. Joe With KUNG-FU Grip? Why watch Blade Runner when you can watch Blade Runner: The Final Cut with the original, full-length unicorn daydream sequence?

And why in the name of all that is good and crunchy would you ever eat regular Oreos when Double Stuf Oreos exist?

Such questions haunted me as I gazed upon Baked Oat Bites, one of three new cereals from Nature Valley. It looks just like Kellogg’s Cracklin’ Oat Branbut with an additional sugary drizzle.

But I gave Cracklin’ Oat Bran a 10/10, so there lies my conundrum. Is it possible for a new cereal to improve upon perfection, or should the mathematical impossibility of “giving 110%” be left for cheesy sports movies?

It’s time for me to find out. Even if I have to punch a few more holes in my belt to do so. With 210 calories per 3/4 cup, that shouldn’t be hard to do.

Cereal Time with Gabe Fonseca: Grins & Smiles & Giggles & Laughs and Ice Cream Cones Cereal

Do you need a smile or an ice cream cone to get you through today’s dreaded series of 24 grueling hours (a.k.a. Monday)? Well all of my fellow human Garfields out there need not despair, because thanks to the latest two videos in cereal MVP Gabe Fonseca’s YouTube series, you can see a whole bowl full of ’em!

Cereal Time is a video series dedicated to highlighting a different classic, new, or retro cereal each week. For a series that has given me countless chuckles and snickers, it seems appropriate that the first video we’d like to share with you is all about Grins & Smiles & Giggles & Laughs cereal. Review: Kellogg’s Blueberry with Vanilla Drizzle Mini-Wheats Harvest Delights

IMG_4262Last episode on: “Cerealously’s Milk-Soaked Adventures in Breakfast World”

Dan was not thrilled with Mini-Wheats Cranberry Harvest Delights. When the Mini-Wheats attacked, Dan attempted to coax some sense of goodness out of the cough syrupy cranberry purée buried deep into each  tumbleweed of a biscuit. But their mere kiss of yogurt flavor was not enough.

As a result, Dan was ready to kiss the Harvest Delights brand goodbye, until an impartial jury of Internet commenters convinced him to give the Blueberry Vanilla variety a try. Apprehensive, hungry, and—for some reason—a little sweaty, Dan conceded.

We now join our cereal hero (we only call him a hero because he likes hero sandwiches), already locked into a stare down with a box of Mini-Wheats Blueberry Vanilla Harvest Delights.

Review: Post Gluten Free Chocolate Honey Bunches of Oats (2016)

IMG_4256♫ Reunited, and it feeeels so gooood! ♫

These 6 words looped in my head approximately 1 gorillion (an enormous, gorilla-sized number, for the unaware) times as I finally managed to lay my quivering hands on a box of Chocolate Honey Bunches in the year 2016.

Those who have been following the blog should be familiar with my love for Honey Bunches of Oats with Chocolate Clusters, a cereal that was discontinued some 6 years ago in a decision by Post Foods that I’m still convinced was somehow a violation of the Geneva Conventions.

I won’t bore you with the details, but Chocolate Honey Bunches were a pivotal part of my personal cereal mythology back in their heyday. Let’s just say that without Honey Bunches of Oats with Chocolate Clusters, this site probably wouldn’t exist today.

But now, I no longer need to cry forlorn tears over faded Polaroids of the cereal, because it’s back. Does it live up to my own super high standards? I’m willing to undergo a sugar high to find out. Continue reading
